Glossary
The words, defined.
Scramble has its own vocabulary. Here is all of it, one line each.
- Band
- One of the yardage ranges on the outcome ring, each wedge labelled with the range it covers. The set on offer is chosen for the play in front of you rather than fixed in advance, so near the goal line the long ones drop off the ring entirely.
- Call
- One prediction: a player, a play type, an outcome and a multiplier, locked in before the snap. It is the game’s word for the whole unit, which is why the button says CALL IT.
- Division
- The group of players you are ranked against in Ranked play. Each week the top of a division moves up and the bottom moves down.
- Golden play
- A play the game marks as worth more than usual — goal to go, clutch time, or a lightning round — with a bonus multiplier on top. You find out before you call, not after.
- League
- A season-long private group of between 2 and 50 people, joined with an invite code. Its scoring rule decides whether every call you make that week counts or only your best scoring plays do.
- Multiplier
- How much a call counts if it lands: x1, x2, x3, x5 or x10, on the wheel’s innermost ring. x1 is unlimited; the boosted tiers come out of a budget for that game.
- Pick-six bonus
- What a called interception earns on top of everything else when the interception is returned for a touchdown.
- Points
- What a correct call earns: the less likely the call was, the more it is worth, scaled by your multipliers, with a flat bonus added for getting it right at all. Points are for bragging rights and have no monetary value.
- Public room
- A room for a single game that anyone can drop into, created by the game rather than by a person. The alternative to a watch party you had to be invited to.
- Ranked
- Playing for your own record rather than a private group’s. Every call counts toward where you sit in your division.
- Read
- Partial credit on a yardage call: the right player, the right play type and the right kind of outcome, but the yards landed in a different band. It is worth less than a win, scales with the multiplier you picked and nothing else, and it advances your streak the same way a win does. It does not count as a win.
- Read rate
- How often you had the right idea: wins and reads together, as a share of everything you have settled. As the app puts it, a read is the right player and play, any yardage.
- Roll
- The button that fills the wheel with a random call that is legal for the situation. It never spends a boosted multiplier on you, so a roll always comes back at x1 or the cheapest tier you have left.
- Shell
- The controller housing the app wears — Midnight, Indigo, Platinum, Spice or Jet Black. Purely cosmetic, and one of them is earned by growing a league you created.
- Shot clock
- The ring around the call button, draining as the window before the snap closes. When it runs out, the call you have riding is the one you are stuck with.
- Streak
- How many calls you have got right in a row in one game. A streak raises a multiplier that stacks on top of the one you picked, up to a cap, and a read advances it the same way a win does.
- Streak shield
- A save that carries a streak through one miss instead of resetting it. There are only so many in a game, and a streak has to have got going before a save protects it, so it is worth keeping one back for a streak worth protecting.
- Tier
- Where a division sits on the ladder. From the bottom: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Scramble.
- Try
- The point-after play. When a touchdown is scored, a short window opens to call the extra point or the two-point conversion, separately from the next play.
- Watch party
- A room built around one game instead of a season. Everyone joins off the host’s QR code, and each play reveals whose call landed while it is still on the screen.
- Wheel
- The dial a call is made on: four nested rings — player, play type, outcome and multiplier — worked from the outside in, with a position filter riding above them to narrow who the player ring offers.
